Malignant tumors or cancer with the mesothelial memberanes is called malignant mesothelioma or just mesothelioma.

CAUSES OF MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

Mesothelioma Cancer is also called Asbestos Cancer because this cancer is caused by a persons being exposed to asbestos. Asbestos has been long understood to have been associated many breathing related problems. In modern days when Asbestos became used more for many applications like house roofing, heat insulation etc, its use increased. Mesothelioma Cancer is usually seen people who inhale asbestos dust like those who are involved in cutting and designing asbestos items and workers in asbestos factory.are at high risk of getting Mesothelioma cancer.

TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

Basically there are three different types of Mesothelioma cancer known. The first is Pleural Mesothelioma whichaffects the lung's protective covering in the chest cavity. The Pleral mesothelioma represents about % of all the Mesothelioma cancer incidences. The second type of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma. This affects the abdominal cavity and the last type is Pericardial Mesothelioma which affects the cardiac cavity.

HISTORY OF MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

Mesothelioma cancer was first recognized late in the 18th century. But only in 20th century did a serious study of Mesothelioma cancer done in detail. This is when the reason came to light that it is Asbestos which caused this type of cancer. It is said that about 3000 odd cases of Mesothelioma cancer is detected in US every year on an average those days which peaked between 1970 till 1985 which the industries were relying a lot on asbestos. Shipyards constructing naval ships had quite a few incidence of mesothelioma cancer.

MESOTHELIOMA CANCER EFFECTS WHO ALL

It is statistically seen that men over the age of 60 years has the maximum incidence of Mesothelioma cancer. However, women and children also have been patients. The main reason is that it is men who used to work in asbestos factories than women and children who do not come directly in contact with asbestos.  As you see in the clock a few sectors in the clock dial, they represent the age group and the percentage of Mesothelioma Cancer that can be terminal. It is understood that even though chances are negligible and not statistically proven, living in houses with asbestos roof may be avoided to prevent getting Mesothelioma Cancer or Asbestos Cancer.

CHANCES OF GETTING MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

Statistically, the red secotor of 37.7% Mesothelioma Cancer was seen in individuals mainly men aged between 75 to 85 years of age. Above 85 years of age the probability is only 12.2%. But at a younger age of 25 to 35 years the probablity of getting Mesothelioma is very less of just 0.3%. Between 35 to 45 years of age the chances are 1.3%. With increasing age the chances of getting Mesothelioma increases. So between an age of 45 to 55 years the chances increases to 4.6%. Further, between 55 to 65 years of age the chances increases to 14.7%. And between an age of 65 to 75 years of age your chances of getting Mesothelioma Cancer is fairly high at 29.1%.

MESOTHELIOMA CANCER - DETECTION

It is quite difficult to detect Mesothelioma cancer simply because the symptoms of mesothelioma are quite similar to other respiratory conditions and the pathology can be very difficult to distinguish from the adenocarcinoma of the lungs. The symptoms may include chest pain, chronic coughing, chest and abdomen effusions and even the presence of blood in the lung fluid.. However, today we can find out the malignancy type using biopsy. Also body imagins scans like MRI or Magnetic Resonance Image, computer topography also called CT scan and PET or Positron Emission Tomography are available although it may be a bit expensive and there may a bit of waiting period as these facilities are not very common and there is long list of patients awaiting for these imaging scans. Mesothelioma being a rare disease, its rate of occurance is less and there is a formal staging classification only for pleural mesothelioma.

ESOTHELIOMA CANCER - TREATMENT

Originally, Mesothelioma Cancer had no treatment. But today the technology has advanced and there is permanent cure for this kind of cancer, but it can occur again because it a very aggressive disease. The treatment of Mesothelioma cancer includes surgery and removal of the malignant tissue, Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is useful only if there is a malignant cancer growth. Radiation is applied on to this fast multiplying cells which are killed by the radiation. But to prevent its spread, Chemotherapy is used over a long period of time because the chemotherapy drugs injected nto the body is not only harmful to the malignant cancer cells but also harms the normal cells. It is a little difficult to endure the chemotherapy over months as there is a lot of body changes like hair falling off. Further, the patient loses appetite and may even be depressed. The family has to ensure that the patient receives support and does not slip into depression.
