Free PowerPoint Tips - A Glass of Water During A Long Presentation
When I was student I used to see a glass of water placed on the rostrum covered with a lid. I used to wonder why do they keep a glass of water there only for the speaker to dring and no water is provided to the audience. Audience is given refreshment after about 2 hours when at least three speakers have finsihed their presentation. I was more jealous than inquisitive to know why that glass of water is kept on the rostrum.
Years later, I had to prepare Presentation using PowerPoint and it was supposed tobe just 20 minutes. I prepared it very well. My script went into two dozen pages or more as it was written with double spacing. I rehearsed it at home so many times that I could almost present it from memory. I was very confident.
The next day, when I reached the auditorium, I saw the glass of water kept on the rostrum. I knew it was for me. The moment I saw, I requested the assistant who was there to operate my slides, to take the glass of water away. I did not want the audience to see that I am getting a preferential treatment in the form of a glass. I am one of them. If they don't have water then I too should not drink water during the presentation.
I was experienced and did not know the gravity of what I did. Any way, the audience were all there on time and I was very excited and eager to deliver my presentation. I had my script. But I had planned to do it without looking at the script.
Just before the presentation started, my boss called me behind stage and said, "Boy, I don't want you to say even one word which is not written in your script. Do you get me?"
By then my name was announced and I was introduced. I walked up to the stage and started reading my script the way I had practiced. It all went well for about 10 minutes or so. Then, my mouth started drying up. My voice started breaking because my throat was also running dry because of my continuous talking. My mouth was no more producing saliva. I was desperate to drink some water.
I was now slowly realising the grave mistake I did when I had told the helper to remove that glass of sparkling water which was there for me. I regretted my own wrong decision. Now, I was too embarassed to request for the glass of water in full view of my audience.
Another 5 minutes went past. I had 6 more pages to go. But I could not continue as my throat completly dried up and I was chocking as my voice box gave up.
But God was kind and came in the form of my assistant, who got up seeing me choke and brought the glass of water he did not throw away, but just kept on the other side of the computer he was operating. Probably, he has seen it happen with stupid presenters like me before.
I had no words to thank him enough for saving me witha Glass of Water and maintaining my reputation on my very first presentation.
I strongly recommend that you always keep a Glass of Water handy during your presentation if it is going to be longer than 10 minutes, so that you can take a sip of water once in a while to wet your mouth and keep speaking flawlessly, unless you are keen only to learn from your own mistakes.
